Application requirements for M.S. in Human Performance and Rehabilitation Sciences

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for the Master of Science in Human Performance and Rehabilitation Sciences, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You should have a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, or a related area.
  • Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
  • GRE scores are recommended as one component to strengthen the prospective student’s application.

For students interested in M.S. Human Performance and Rehabilitation Sciences + public health graduate certificate

Students intending to study in the M.S. Human Performance and Rehabilitation Sciences + public health graduate certificate track must also apply to the Fairbanks School of Public Health.

Application deadline is rolling, with either spring- or fall-semester admission.*

*Applicants wishing to receive full consideration for assistantships and funding opportunities should have their full application submitted by Feb. 1.

Application instructions

  1. Plan to secure three letters of recommendation (not a relative). You will need the names and email addresses of your submitters for the IU Graduate Application. Please make your recommenders aware of your application and deadline, and give them three to four weeks to prepare. They will be sent a link to submit the letters.
  2. Craft a personal statement. The statement should address your professional experiences, personal goals, and career aspirations plus how earning a master’s degree relates to each. This should be one page, double-spaced, and ready to upload into the IU Graduate Application. Tips for writing are included on the graduate application page.
  3. Request official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended. Please allow additional time for international transcripts.   4. Be prepared to pay for application.
  5. GRE test scores not required.

Information for international students

In addition to the requirements above, international applicants must follow the international application process and admission standards of the Office of International Affairs.

To earn admissions as an international applicant, you must also meet these program requirements:

  • If you are a non-native English speaker, you must meet the minimum requirements for English proficiency.
  • Applicants who complete coursework outside of the United States must have their official foreign transcripts evaluated and translated by an approved independent educational evaluating service based in the United States at their own expense. The evaluation should establish a degree equivalent and course-by-course equivalent for all foreign coursework.

Minimum requirement for English proficiency

The test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) test is used and you must meet the following scores for each sub-section and total.

  • Reading: 5.0
  • Listening: 5.0
  • Speaking: 5.0
  • Writing: 5.0
