Biography

Stuart J. Warden, BPhysio (Hons), Ph.D., FACSM, FASBMR, is the associate dean for research within the IU School of Health & Human Sciences and a chancellor’s professor in the IU physical therapy program. Warden also holds an adjunct professor appointment within the department of anatomy, cell biology and physiology at the IU School of Medicine and is the director of the Musculoskeletal Function, Imaging, and Testing Resource Core (FIT Core) within the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health.

Warden completed his physiotherapy and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Melbourne in Australia before undertaking post-doctorate training at the Australian Institute of Sport and IU School of Medicine. He joined the faculty of IU as an assistant professor before rising through the ranks to become a chancellor’s professor—the most distinguished faculty appointment on campus.

Warden’s research focuses on the musculoskeletal system with a particular interest on bone stress injuries (including stress fractures) and physical activity effects on bone health. He has contributed over 180 peer-reviewed publications, including in the highest ranked journals such as Nature Reviews Disease Primers, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and British Journal of Sports Medicine. Warden’s work has also been covered in the mainstream media, including in Vogue, Outside, The New York Times, Men’s Health, The Washington Post, and Fitness.

Warden has served as Deputy Editor for the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Section Editor for Current Osteoporosis Reports, and Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy and Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise. He has also served on the editorial boards of Bone, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, and Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Additionally, Warden has peer-reviewed over 500 manuscripts submitted to more than 110 different journals.

Warden is currently on a quest to complete each of the world’s major marathons having already completed the Boston (x3), New York (x2), and Berlin Marathons.
